DC can make ground on the Marvel Universe
The Marvel movie juggernaut has a massive head start on the DC universe but the Justice League movie can give DC fans hope of a bright future.
Yes there have been initial hiccups with the latest reimagining of Superman and the dreadfully dour Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movies, but Wonder Woman started to turn the corner. The film was still flawed but gave a glimmer of light that the DC movies could provide the spectacle we have come to expect from their Marvel counterparts. In the latest DC offering, Zack Snyder delivers his high impact directorial style with the help of a well crafted, if not by the numbers screenplay by Buffy and Serenity creator, Josh Whedon.
Instead of waiting for movies featuring Cyborg, The Flash and Aquaman before starting the Justice League series they were well introduced into the Justice League movie without seeing to waste too much of the movie's 120 minutes screen time. Whilst the Aquaman movie is in progress starring the formidable Jason Mamoa it is foreseeable that a Flash movie, with the humorous lead Ezra Miller, would find a significant audience.
The plot of the Justice League movie is far from original but parallels many aspects synonymous with the Marvel universe. Humour, action, pathos, heroism and humanity are mixed well with an appropriately themed soundtrack. Heroes at odds with each other and indeed their own place in the world make for more than one dimensional characters. The two extra scenes throughout the credits are well worth waiting for and bode well for a cast of villains, which will most certainly include the Legion of Doom in future movies.
Do you have to choose between Marvel and DC movies? I think not. It allows us more spectacle and for this 44 year old self-confessed super hero geek I'm excited for the cinematic experiences ahead.
What are your thoughts? Do you have to choose? If you do are you a Marvel or DC fan and why?
